Raab

Late Life Crisis - May 2023

April ended with a trot in Regent's Park - the Run Through 10k. Daughter No.2 buzzed round in 52 minutes without extending herself; I followed on in 1 hour 6 minutes, which is not bad for an old boy, and unlike with last year's London Landmarks Half Marathon, I didn't finish with barely 10cc of fuel in the tank (for the uninitiated, it's all about powering over the last 100 metres and making people think that this is how you have run all the way round).

The Wrath of Raab

Introduction

I could not resist the temptation. The events that led ultimately to Dominic Raab's resignation were to be analysed by a KC and the report made public. No need to rely on media reporting and comment, partial or otherwise.

'Investigation Report to the Prime Minister' by Adam Tolley KC was published on 20th April 2023, and was suitably dry and dense, prompting many readers to turn off after the first few pages and find something more stimulating for a gossip gorge on a politician.

All publicity for this man is good publicity, and even better if you can play the victim card :

'You know why

I have nomination high?

Stormy Daniels'

With apologies to Etta James.

Would you feel more confident in trusting one of the blue tick Twitterati because they have paid for their tick? Me neither.

Late Life Crisis - February 2023

An email to me from Lawyer2B. A top City law firm is promoting a (paid - laudable) work experience scheme. The text starts: 'You have ambitions to be a world-class lawyer'. I jumped, but then thought it's a bit late.

The language is interesting. It could have started as a rhetorical question, but the drafting team went for painting a word picture of how a person might see themselves and their potential - classic aspiration marketing. Hopefully it will result in plentiful applications, though one should always be chastened by 'Many are called.....'.

Late Life Crisis - June 2021

There is word that Oxford University is considering phasing out imperial measurements as part of its efforts to decolonise its maths, physics and life sciences faculties. So should I respond by decolonising my underpants drawer? A quick recce shows measurements in both inches and centimetres. Is that acceptable? Possibly not  - every time I put on a pair of pants I might feel drawn to observe the inches measurements and lapse into a regression that would count as minor thought crime.
